Beating the Jakarta Floods
April 18, 2011
http://ezinearticles.com/?Beating-the-Jakarta-Floods&id=6191142
Floods are inevitable in Jakarta, and no area seems immune from the recent 'flash' floods that hit even the most affluent areas of the city. Indonesians are very adaptable people, and find a solution for themselves, rather than wait and get trapped in a flooding area. So they simply take off their shoes, roll up their trousers or jeans, and wade through the water, casually wading through the least flooded area of the streets. Drivers have a different solution, they park up on the highest piece of land, wait and if the floods worsen, lock up their car and join the slow meandering lines of people wading through the water. Floods are not funny anymore in Jakarta, and when the city's main business district is hit, and the only main road to the airport closed. But everyone here must be thinking, Will the rainy season floods ever stop?

Engineer Reynaldo C. Amata, head of the City Environment and Sanitation Office, said that the inspections were necessary since without them, excessive groundwater extraction by households and companies could lead to land subsidence or land sinking. The MOA came on the heels of a study conducted by five Ateneo de Manila University post-graduate students who reported that the trend of unusually high water levels during high tide in Malabon was the result of land subsidence.
