Extraordinary Contributions
I am looking for input and review of the following list of volunteer contributions to
the nonprofit to date. This is efforts to further the NONPROFIT projects, which has
funding, not the TT web site which has been and will continue to be 100% volunteer. The
nonprofit has been promised additional funding, and where in the past we have just paid
expenses and purchased equipment to get the projects going, we may be approaching in a
year or so the ability to pay part of full time salary to those devoting their lives
(or part of their lives) to the nonprofit projects. Most nonprofits, such as the Red
Cross, have full time staff AND volunteer contributions. We are not there yet, but there
may be enough funds for SOME compensation for PAST efforts, which is only fair if one is
to start paying for FUTURE efforts.
At the last Board Meeting in April, there was an Agenda item asking the Board Members to
think about this issue, and it listed suggested CRITERIA for a compensation for past
efforts. Work on proposals should never be compensated; attendance by Board Members at
monthly meetings on NetMeeting should not be compensated, etc. Where an individual did a
task that under normal circumstances could or would be hired out to a professional (like
an accountant or attorney or public relations firm) their effort saved the nonprofit money. Where an individual took responsibility for a task, drove it, and the task competed and a product was produced (meansurable and palpable), this stands assisting or failing to complete. The relative importance of the task matters too, central and with dependencies or trivial, etc.
The following criteria, in my opinion, should be used in evaluating which past efforts
deserve compensation should our funding this year be enough to do so, bridging between
nonpayment and paying part or full time salaries.
- individual took responsibilty for task, owned it, drove it, made it happen
- task was important, central, had dependencies, not trivial
- task was completed, with measureable and palpable results
- task would otherwise been done by professional (accountant, attorney, public relations
firm)
- hours expended were outside of few hours now and then, was dedicated
I’ve listed below a summary of efforts and time spent on these efforts, to the best of
my knowledge and estimating ability. I’ve divided the list according to whether the
effort was being driven by an individual, or they were just assisting.
